I was recently at a barbecue with a friend who is a dog trainer/owner. I wanted to know what she saw in a dog that had a lot of personality. I was thinking of something to say about how barking and barking at the dog was a form of self-awareness but not a bad thing.
I mean, when a dog does something like bark, it’s an expression of aggression, so we need to put a little effort into showing that aggression and learning from it. But we also need to stop being so dogmatic about it. Most of us are so fearful of being attacked that we rarely have to think twice about how we’re going to defend ourselves. It’s a form of self-awareness if you will. But the same goes for a dog.
In the case of the dog, its a form of self-awareness and the barking is one of its manifestations. If you were in a car and you saw a car driving towards you, you would likely slow down and stop, because that is something you would not want to do to a car. So the same goes for a dog. When you see a dog barking, that is something that you need to stop, understand, and learn from.
We don’t know much about the dog, except that it is a mix of German shepherd and pitbull, not the smartest dog, and that it is, in some sense, self aware. It has learned how to bark, and I’m sure it has learned it is barking to warn anyone around of danger. And as for its self awareness, I think the dog has self awareness, because it knows that its barking is a warning.
I don’t know that the dog has self awareness, but the dog did learn to bark, and that it is aware of its own barking. The barking is not the dog’s fault. The dog is barking an alert. The dog is aware, and the dog is alert.
While I don’t have a dog, I do know that dogs can be very smart. They are as smart as the smartest human being. They are not unaware. They are not self aware. They are aware, but they are not aware of themselves, and in fact, they are aware of no one but themselves. Not the person, not the dog, and not the person’s dog.
